Kids Write the Darndest Things

Last week we went up the "Ranch" in Idaho to do some work on the house (the house my dad grew up in) that my partents will be moving into at some point...maybe in the next year? Anyway, while we were there, we went through some of the random stuff in the rooms and I found the following letter. It was written by my older sister, Anna, when she was 7 (the envelope was dated May 1986). My grandparents had taken me, my younger brother and younger sister to stay with them for a while...I don't remember for how long as I was only 5. But, I do remember going to pre-school while I was there, which Anna references. So, without further delay...here it is!

the distant future...the year 2011...finally robotic beings rule the world...

we had great fun dressing up as our favorite robots for halloweeeeeeeeeeeeeeen! my favorite part was taking phoebe out. the boxes were so long, it made walking hard, so we looked really funny! oh, it was so great!

it's been a while

yeah, so it's been a bit since i last posted anything. i'm pretty sure no one even checks in to see if there is anything new anymore, but if you do then it's your lucky day! not really, i don't have time to write anything. i need to be preparing a lesson for church tomorrow :)

anyway, life has been busy. we bought a house, rocky went to iraq for a year, i've been working from home since we moved back from california, we got a dog (phoebe), we are doing a lot of work on the house and yard, we have six chickens and a garden where we grow ginormous zucchini, i made apricot jam for the first time this year, i was just called as the relief society president for our ward and rocky is the assistant clerk, i broke my foot two weeks ago, rocky is applying to the U for grad school (mba) and will start in january (i have no doubt he will get in), i am so happy to have rocky back, we only have one car now (the truck) but that's ok cause i can't drive anyway, my dad is finally back from afghanistan for good, rocky rocks. that's about it.

come visit, we are finishing up the guest room so you won't have to sleep on the couch!

i recently went to visit my little sister, amanda, in south korea. the army has had her stationed there for the last year and she is about to move to texas, so i had to go see her. unfortunately, rocky couldn't came with me as he is currently in arizona finishing up his training, which is a bummer because he would have LOVED every minute of it. sorry to take a cool vacation without you, rocky!

i had a lot of fun seeing the sights with my sister. we lived in korea from 1990-1994, so i really enjoyed getting to experience everything as an adult and going back and seeing where we had lived. strangely, everything seems to have shrunk in the last 15 years. some things haven't changed though and i had fun remembering that:

- using the restroom can be a great workout on your legs, since squatting is the preferred method.
- personal space does not exist in korea.
- there is no such thing as a line and if you believe there is, you will NEVER get to the front of it.
- my name is REALLY hard for a korean to pronounce. they have a hard time with r's and l's, so my name comes out as llaache kail. this means you have to pay strict attention to any announcements at the airport if you don't already have a seat assignment for your flight.
- any strip of asphalt is really just the bonneville speedway in disguise. i'm all about driving fast, 75 mph down a city street is just a bit much for me. one of our taxi drivers was seriously driving that fast. i saw the speedometer.

- anatomically correct statues, murals...anything really...is a must. including the pirate on the log ride at seoul land amusement park. the pirate statue was peeing into the stream. yes, peeing. i wish i had taken a picture. i did get this picture though. it's on the packaging of a toy, a bubble gun. i thought it was hilarious!
- when shopping, you will be stalked by the owner/salesperson. and if you look at anything for longer than 2 seconds, it is their mission to not let you leave with out buying it. so i bought a lot of stuff.
- korean food is the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i really love it. and they advertise the food with pictures of RAW meat.

- i have a cool little sister :)
i love korea. i've got to take rocky there someday.

a tribute to craigslist

i just wanted to take a moment and praise the genius who invented craigslist. i assume his name was craig, but i have been known to be wrong before. maybe it was a lady who came up with the idea and she named it after her favorite pet goldfish (if this had been teagan, we would be using pooperslist instead of craigslist). or maybe it was a guy who named it after his little brother. who knows? whoever he or she may be, i think many of us owe him or her a huge THANKS for helping us buy and sell things, from and to complete strangers, at cut throat prices.

thank you craigslist, for my snazy and posh recliner chairs! for only $50!!
thank you craigslist, for helping me sell my beloved scooter!
thank you for the fabulous coffee table, the ikea book shelves, the great desk, and the chest-of-drawers! thank you for helping me sell that mattress, and for giving me hope that one day i can finally sell the truck! i can do anything with craigslist!!!!
